Whether or not important for judges and breeders?


The tail consists of vertebrae which belong to the vertebral column of the dog.

The spinal column is, in turn, a part of the skeleton.

The construction of the skeletal system begins at an early stage of embryonic development.

It develops from one of the three germ layers, the so-called mesoderm.

From this same germ layer also takes the place of, among other things, the development blood vessel system ((including the heart) , the muscular system and the genitourinary apparatus (kidney and urinary tract and reproductive organs).


Genetic features:


The whole development of the fertilized ovum to pup, as well as the development of the animal is then sent in principle and monitored by the genetic factors that has a puppy in it.

For the development of the spine have been demonstrated in the mouse for 20 hereditary factors.

Also for the skeletal development after birth are again many genetic factors responsible.

All in all a complicated process that can best go wrong.

Mutations occur regularly. This may result in, among other genetic defects.

This occurs in the genetic material in sperm or egg, then these effects are transmissible to offspring.

Genetic abnormalities are not always expressed in the phenotype. The reasons for this are several.

The mode of inheritance (recessive or dominant) there is one of, but also the degree of heterogeneity or variability in the set of genes involved.


Deviations tail vertebrae:


Abnormalities of tail vertebrae are among the skeletal abnormalities. They may be different in shape, depending on the defective gene or the defective genes.

For example, the tail absent, too short with a stop-end or a blunt tail.

The tail may show one or more kinks of different shape, hooks and not passing standard curves.

There may be too much or too little and sometimes double vortices. Also, abnormalities of the spinal joints occur.

Kink Cakes can incidentally still occur several weeks after birth. Limit these tail abnormalities to the tail, the dog has not really affected and will  be able to live freely.

However, it is bred with these dogs, they can go such deformities occur in the offspring.

This limit is then rarely to the tail, but occurred in other parts of the spine.

Examples we have seen in dogs in the cervical vertebrae, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae.

There are also examples of cleft palate, water heads, crooked jaw, deformities of the ribs, too much or too little toes and short legs.

As a result of the interaction between the various hereditary factors may cause deviations in other organ systems, which are applied from the  mesoderm.

Examples include the persistent (lasting) embryonic blood vessels, a septal defect (defect of the heart septum), ectopic ureters (tubes from kidney to  bladder are in the wrong place), the absence of the anus and cloaca formation (anus and urethra have one common output ).

These abnormalities are usually categorized as congenital anomalies which would not hereditary. Of course comes that also for. Just think of the  Softenonbaby programs.

As long as no non-genetic cause has been determined we must half of safety  assume that genetic factors play a role

The reverse reasoning; First we show that it is hereditary, serious consequences can have for the population.


Knowledge, registration and breeding:


The relationship between the occurrence of said deformities in organ systems and prevent of kinked tails at one of the parents in the family of both

parents has been established by a number of varieties. Also in other species these relationships occur. Scientific research in this area has been done in mice.

The breeding of dogs that exhibit a kinked tail, ie, where the tail vertebrae are not legal succession but crooked and so fused with a partially narrower are to end in a point by definition irresponsible.

This is also related to curve back, abnormal shape of the rib cage, crooked teeth, short legs and too much or too little toes.

Judges have a duty to carefully ever approve them dogs submitted for testing, wherein the examination of the tail should not be omitted.

Skeletal abnormalities but also other deficiencies that the health of a dog (also the offspring), adverse influence should always be considered for information to breeders and owners.

In fact, these dogs deserve not the qualification 'Excellent'. It is a deviation from the normal image.

Also breeders, especially the varieties that currently docked tails may have should the tail abnormality in the puppies to take good note of this to keep registration and certainly the buyers of these deviations to be informed.


The request of a breeding ban on the pedigree would decorate them!


When we realize our responsibility all together and take, this means that we have the health and welfare of our varieties have high priority.
